Die VISION

The VISION

Switzerland as a whisky nation

3303 m above sea level – at this height is one of the most beautiful viewing platforms in the Upper Engadine. It is exactly the height of the Corvatsch mountain station near Silvaplana and that puts us right in the middle of an exciting and unusual project that involves two visionaries and liquid gold. The two visionaries are Rinaldo Willy and Pascal Mittner. They have decided to build a new whisky distillery in this unique setting.
Meanwhile, it’s more than a dream, much more. The plans are drawn and the opening took place on October 10th, 2020. But how does one even come up with the idea of building a distillery on a mountain? Is it all just a marketing gimmick? Not at all, as Rinaldo Willy emphasizes. “On the one hand, it’s about realizing a vision that should make Switzerland known as a whisky nation, a kind of beacon that shines far beyond the borders.” On the other hand, the altitude has an exciting influence on the burning behavior. “At this altitude, the distillation process occurs at a temperature around 10 degrees lower than at sea level. Which means: More aromas and higher complexity that are preserved.»

The location of the new distillery is spectacular, “a special place to work. In the back we have the glacier, the Bernina massif with the Biancograt. At our feet is the unique Upper Engadin lake landscape.» enthuses Pascal Mittner. Exactly what whisky lovers appreciate. «Impressive nature, unique moments and experiences. We can offer that and much more.” The vision of the two producers is to establish Switzerland as a whisky nation. Your project should make a contribution to this, in a holiday corner of Switzerland, where, according to the Guinness Book of Records, there is the largest and smallest whisky bar in the world and now the highest single malt whisky!

Impressions of the CONSTRUCTION SITE

The highest whisky and gin distillery in the world is at 3303 m above sea level.

Not only the location of the new distillery is spectacular, the whole construction was too.
It was definitely not an ordinary construction site, because the height, the limited space and the weather had a lot to say in the planning and implementation.
